Savannah’s first green housing development features Extreme Insulation

SAVANNAH, GA - Residents of Savannah’s first green housing development have begun to settle into the new Sustainable Fellwood community located just west of the south’s most famous historic district.  As Phase I nears completion, new residents in the first 110 apartments have already begun to learn about the new features in their “green home”.  

Sustainable Fellwood is a three-phased community in the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Neighborhoods pilot program.  Each apartment building will be LEED for Homes certified in this mixed use, mixed income community, which includes 11 buildings in Phase one,  10 buildings in Phase two, and one senior high rise in Phase three.

Each building is constructed with a thermally efficient building envelope which includes a vapor barrier on top of OSB (orient strand board) sheathing. All penetrations in the sheathing are sealed with caulk or spray foam, and then insulated with R19 spray applied cellulose insulation (made from recycled newspaper). This provides an extra barrier for energy efficiency and balanced temperature comfort.

The walls in each interior apartment are then finished then 100% synthetic sheet rock (a recycled product).  Low-VOC paints, adhesives and sealants are then applied - which release no, or minimal pollutants and are virtually odor free.

The phased site coordination and construction management is coordinated by Melaver Construction and Development, LLC who offers full service general contracting, construction management, design/build, green building and LEED consulting services.  Melaver Consulting is coordinating the green building certifications and is responsible for the collaborated vision of sustainability which has been driving Sustainable Fellwood since its conception.
