Melaver, Inc. Invests in a Sustainable Future – Accepts Naming Opportunity at Southface Eco Office
Atlanta, GA - November 9, 2005 – When the Southface Eco Office
opens its doors as a one-of-a-kind sustainable office, education and
event space, guests will enter the property through an exquisite atrium
space – the Melaver Eco Nexus. Southface, a nonprofit promoting
sustainable homes, workplaces and communities, broke ground on the Eco
Office in September, with completion scheduled for mid-2006. The
three-story structure, approximately 10,000 square feet, will serve as
a model of environmentally responsible commercial construction and will
demonstrate that green commercial building creates a healthy and
productive workplace with reduced operating costs.
Melaver, Inc., a Savannah, Ga.-based, vertically-integrated
sustainable real-estate firm , recently renovated the Whitaker Building
in Savannah, one of the the first properties in the U.S. to receive
status as both a registered historic landmark and silver certification
under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system. In 2006,
Melaver will hold a grand opening ceremony for one of the first and
only all LEED retail shopping center complexes in the country, Abercorn
Common in Savannah.
“We are a third generation family business with a history of
community involvement,” says CEO Martin Melaver. “We are also committed
to environmental responsibility. By supporting the Eco Office, we are
enabling Southface to grow its important work toward ensuring a
sustainable future for generations to come.”
The Eco Office will showcase innovative ideas for saving
energy and water, reducing waste, re-using and recycling materials, and
maintaining a healthy indoor environment. “When completed, the Eco
Office will be one of the greenest commercial buildings in the world,”
said Dennis Creech, Executive Director of Southface.
The building will feature off-the-shelf products and technologies
and will give Southface a demonstration facility and a stellar teaching
tool. “We will be able to increase by 50 percent our ability to educate
the commercial building industry in ‘green building’ techniques,”
Creech continued. “The professionals at Melaver are already on board
and accomplishing remarkable things in their projects, but we still
have work to do to transform the industry toward making sustainable
practices commonplace.” The Eco Office will provide classroom and event
space as well as offices for Southface and the Urban Land Institute,
Atlanta District Council. On track for LEED Platinum Certification, the
building will enhance the opportunities available on the Southface
Atlanta campus to demonstrate environmentally sound design and
construction principles.
Melaver joins a growing list of companies and individuals
committed to supporting Southface’s mission. In addition to the Melaver
Eco Nexus, the Eco Office includes The Home Depot Foundation Training
Center and the Epic Metals Executive Suites.
